New champion?

Movement

#1 Richard Karlsson has broken the AF tie with #2 Hendrik and taken the lead, becoming the new champ. Hopefully Richard is aware of this. He might not be, because he didn't set any new scores. It was #17 Kouider Benarioua that beat one of Hendrik's times to give Richard the leg up. Kouider had a great week, racing 12 PRs (7 god times!) for a 2.9pt AF cut. His cut was big enough to pass 3 famous players: #18 Jonathan S, #19 Matt T and #20 David S. Kouider, who plays for France, now has several French players ahead of him. Until then, he can rest easy knowing that he is now a Myth B player.

Although Kouider affected the #1, he wasn't the highest active player. That was #9 Andrew Math, who raced 4 PRs and passed #10 Marius Mollenhauer to obtain a single-digit ranking. Upon breaking last week's tie for 10th place, Raphael Segas has dropped back to #11. Andrew also passed Marius in 60Hz to grab 4th place, with only Marijn, Aron and Hendrik above him. Andrew might not be able to pass Marijn any time soon, but Hendrik and Aron are only 0.3 and 0.75 AF pts ahead of him. Maybe this guy will be 2nd in a few weeks?

Perhaps not if #7 Jean-Christophe Lacastaignerate continues to play. The Frenchman has just started a comeback and switched to 60Hz. JC is unranked in 60Hz because he is missing half his timesheet, but if he can beat Andrew in some levels -- and he can, because he's also top-10 overall -- then it would make it harder for Andrew to make that 0.3 cut to reach Hendrik. So far JC has raced two 60Hz records. See the records section.

Still on the topic of 60Hz, #54 Arnaud Guepey has broken into the top-50. He was 57th two weeks ago and is now 48th. The closest active player to him was #76 Ian Gee, who passed Rob Chastain to become USA's no. 7 player. A few more PRs and he will pass me as well smile

Near the top-250, #243 Jordan Jackson moved up 5 places to take a small lead on #247 Rogerio Schneider. Joining them is #250 Jonathan Doelle, who made a smaller cut than Jordan but moved up more positions (12 places) through a denser region. Jordan looks set to be the first of the trio to become Expert C, needing only a 0.04 cut in ARR. Rogerio still inactive.

#117 Piet den Dulk, #158 Pat Hewson and #283 David Landry also made small cuts, but the week's biggest mover was #591 Joshua Mosumky with 25 PRs. It's his first submission in 2 years! Josh says he's making a comeback and just getting the hang of SSMTs... explaining why his PRs are falling so fast. He made a 73pt AF cut on the combined ladder and a 51pt cut in 60Hz (where he's now 450th, up 54 places).

New Records

Two nice new records from Jean-Christophe Lacastaignerate in 60Hz: Wario Colosseum 1'57"547 and 58"071 lap. JSX's course time is G+2 and half a second faster than Aron's God time from two months ago. His lap is also G+2 and 0"25 quicker than Marijn's lap from November. JSX's 50Hz times on this level are faster, but he's only just starting to play 60Hz now.

Player of the Quarter

Still some time left to vote for POQ. Check the previous post!

Movement

#10 Andrew Math found a small improvement in his DDD strategy that helped him make a ~0.1 cut per lap. Using it to his advantage, he beat the course WR by a decent margin and only barely missed out on getting the lap WR (but made a 60hz record). Andrew's 0.4 AF cut and the people he beat when setting these records changed some of the rankings:
-- tie for 10th: Andrew tied #10 Raphael Segas to get a top ten position.
-- tie for 4th: Andrew beat Marijn and Marijn's AF slightly worsened, making him tie Andreas. This means Marijn remained 4th while Andreas moved up from 5th.
-- tie for 1st: Andrew beat Hendrik, making the champ lose the 0.03 lead he had over Richard. So now Hendrik and Richard are both #1. They've been tied before, of course. And now tied again. The last time either of them submitted a score was September last year.
In 60Hz, Andrew made a nice 0.25 cut but is still not quite up to #4 Marius. He remains in 5th there.

The other active power player, #20 Kouider Benarioua, made a big 2.2pt cut from 7 PRs. They were his first PRs of the month and included one God time. Unluckily, he didn't pass anyone... but he did close the gap to #19 David Schiering.

#77 Ian Gee passed Jon Prentice to become 8th among the American players. The 7th American is #76 Rob Chastain, only one place ahead, and they are 34th and 35th in 60Hz. In ARR, Ian became the 80th player to go below 10.0 AF pts.

#177 Flynn Hoppenbrouwers has been getting back into action, lining up his targets and scoring 15 PRs in the first two weeks of the month. Among these PRs was his best time, a 22"4 PB lap that's not only Titan but also in the top-100. Flynn made a solid 14pt cut to move up 10 spots, shooting past 3 fellow Dutchies (and also past Ben Davis, who has been doing some improving of his own, away from the game).

There was some movement around the top-250 region, continuing from last week. #246 Rogerio was inactive this time, but #248 Jordan Jackson passed 8 players to join Rogerio in the top-250. Meanwhile, Germany's #262 Jonathan Doelle is doing a good job catching up to them by jumping 30 positions!

#387 David Landry was active but couldn't stay ahead of #383 Soren Marx, who passed him overall by 4 places and in 60Hz by 1 place (288th vs 289th). Soren's 22pt cut was a result of 25 new PRs, all in 60Hz. But Soren warns us that he may be too busy in the next few weeks with university and may not play too much.

Honourable mentions: #210 Alvaro Fababu (up 6 places).

New Records

Two new records, as mentioned. Andrew Math improved the Dry Dry Desert course time to 1'29"398, a G+10 time that is both a 60Hz and overall record. It's 0"35 faster than Marijn's G+7 record from last November... which was also set in 60Hz! Andrew also improved the 60Hz lap to 27"930, 0"04 faster than Marijn's run from last March. The lap is 3rd overall, slightly behind Richard and Aron's 27"91x laps in 50Hz.

POQ

Alex @ Monday, April 13th   [link]

Time to vote. I've calculated the POQ candidates.

For the players who were here in 2008, it looks like Kouider, Tony, David M and Andrew lead in cuts. Kouider's cuts were the bigger of these players (but he joined most recently) while Andrew's cuts were smaller (but he is ranked highest), and David and Tony were balanced.
Some newcomers who joined during the quarter played well enough to stand out. They were Soren, Sebastien, David L and Jordan. To keep the candidate list short I added only Soren as a choice, because he was ahead in both tables and if you wanted to vote for a newcomer you would (objectively) vote for him. If you don't want to vote for a newcomer, your choice could also be Arnaud G. The veteran made big cuts in 60Hz. These only half-count because he was already a good 50Hz player, but they were big cuts regardless.

Vote here.

POQ

I'll get around to setting up a POQ poll sometime during the week. Off the top of my head the favourites might be Kouider, Soren and Andrew, but we'll see smile

Movement

With Easter just around the corner, actvity was a little lower. Perhaps some people are too busy planning a weekend away, hiding their chocolate eggs, or praying all day... none of which is good for making PRs (unless your all-day praying is for more PRs).

#11 Andrew Math scored to 0.4 AF cut to pass Olivier Peruch to get a little bit closer to the top 10. He needs another 0.5 to catch up to Raphael and Marius. Andrew also passed Olivier in 60Hz to take 5th place, and has a good chance at taking the 4th spot from Marius. As a big bonus, Andrew became a Myth+.

#246 Rogerio Schneider moved up 2 spots and #256 Jordan Jackson moved up 6. They may find some competition in newcomer #292 Jonathan Doelle, who joined at 305th but made a few quick cuts to break 300. Most players behind Jonathan lost 1 AF pt, so #387 David Landry's cut was really closer to 9 than to 8. But in any case, David moved up 10 places overall to pass #299 Joe Kochmanski as payback for last week. In 60Hz he moved up 8 places to 290th.

Movement

#12 Andrew Math scored 5 PRs to get a few steps closer to Olivier Peruch in all stats. He is only 0.3pts behind in combined AF, 0.03 behind in 60Hz-only AF, and 0.07 behind in ARR. A few more PRs should do it. Apart from improving his position, Andrew may also soon get a new title.

#20 Kouider Benarioua is back in action after obtaining a green tick. He raced 24 new times during the past 3 weeks and submitted them all at the end of the month. A 9.2 cut in AF -- resulting in a jump of 9 places -- made him reach the top-20! He also reached Myth C level in ARR and moved ahead of Jake Sopcak and Olivier Lavenant in 60Hz to take 12th place. Kouider's PRs were a mix of half Titan, half Myth and a few God times.

Just outside the top-50, #57 Jerrol Hoppenbrouwers had 6 PRs to report, a mix of old and at least one brand new. He moved up 2 places. Right behind him, #58 Arnaud Guepey was active again but only made a small cut overall and let Jerrol pass him. While Arnaud's overall cut was small, he made a bigger cut in 60Hz to pass 13 players and reach 57th. Jerrol's son #187 Flynn Hoppenbrouwers also raced some new times. With 13 PRs, his 18 pt AF cut pushed him into the top-200 territory. Flynn also became Expert A.

#120 Tony Nguyen made his first March PRs at the end of the month. He only had 3 to report, but he passed 1 player overall and 2 players in 60Hz (now 70th). A little ways behind Tony, #148 Jeff Tsang moved up once position.

Both Schneiders were active, with #248 Rogerio passing 5 players to get top-250 and #317 Leonardo trying to catch up to Rogerio by passing 36 players. In between them was one active player, #261 Jordan Jackson, who made his third 19 pt AF cut in a row. It's almost as if he's calculating it. He moved up 22 places overall and 24 places in 60Hz. He broke through the 60Hz top-200 barrier to finish the quarter at 187th place.

The top-400 region had a lot of activity. Leading the pack, last week's newcomer #396 Joe Kochmanski made a 40pt AF cut to improve by 39 places. Just behind him was #397 David Landry who, although passed by Joe this week, passed several players himself to reach the top-400 as well. Soon to join their ranks will be #410 Soren Marx, who scored a 40pt cut to gain 34 spots. And finally #421 Jose Karica and #439 Ryan Trovillion, both sending a few PRs from last week, both made nearly 20pt AF cuts to get closer to top-400. Joe, Soren and Jose also gained new titles: Advanced B.

In 60Hz, these players are all near the top-300 barrier instead of the top-400 barrier. David (297th) is one spot ahead of Joe (298th) and both made the 200s this week, while Soren jumped to 309th, Jose to 319th and Ryan to 333rd. Almost 100 positions difference for all of them.
